Changes to Secondary Suite Bylaws

June 11, 2021 | Posted by: Kelleway Mortgage Architects

When you receive your Property Tax Notice, it is a great time to check your municipal bylaws if you rent (or are considering renting) part or all of your single-detached residential property (i.e., one house on one lot).

For example, the City of Maple Ridge made changes to its Secondary Suites Bylaws earlier this year in response to rental housing needs.  Single-detached housing no longer needs to be owner-occupied to be rented in part or in full in Maple Ridge.

If you rent out a registered secondary suite and are also an owner-occupier, you do NOT need a business license or a ‘good neighbour agreement.’  However, if you are the owner and do not live in the single-detached residence, you will need a business license and a ‘good neighbour agreement.’
